3-kertaiset kustannukset korkean riskin sydänpotilailla – SPESiOR-tutkimus

Yhteys sydäninfarktin uusintariskin ja sote-palveluiden kustannusten välillä osoitettu SPESiOR-ympäristössä tehdyssä tutkimuksessa

Yhteistyössä uusia tuloksia! ESiOR Oy toteutti yhdessä Novartis-lääkeyrityksen ja Siun sote-hyvinvointialueen tutkimuksen, jonka perusteella jatkokehitetään sydän- ja verisuonitapahtuman kokeneiden potilaiden hoitoa. Uuden julkaisun mukaan potilaan riskitekijäprofiili ja sydäninfarktin uusintariski ovat selkeässä yhteydessä SOTE-kokonaiskustannuksiin. Luokittelu sydäninfarktin tai muun sydän- ja verisuonitapahtuman uusintariskin mukaan voisikin helpottaa yksilöllisen hoidon suunnittelussa ja säästää hoitokustannuksia.1

Tutkimustulos ennakoi mahdollisuuksia säästää terveydenhuollon kustannuksissa

Tutkimuksen mukaan pienimmän uusintatapahtumariskin ryhmässä SOTE-kustannukset olivat yhteensä 15 511 euroa ja vastaavasti suurimman uusintatapahtumariskin ryhmässä 44 859 euroa potilasta kohden viiden vuoden aikana eli 5-vuoden kustannukset kasvoivat lähes 3-kertaiseksi riskin kasvaessa. Kaikki kustannukset eivät ole suoraan kytköksissä sydänsairauteen liittyviin palveluihin.1

  • Tutkimus viittaa siihen, että paremmalla riskitekijöiden hoidolla olisi mahdollista vähentää merkittävästi terveydenhuollon kustannuksia sen lisäksi, että se parantaa potilaiden ennustetta ja elämänlaatua sydäntapahtuman jälkeen, sanoo Tuomas Rissanen, Siun soten kardiologian ylilääkäri.
  • Ennaltaehkäisyn mahdollisuuksien kuvaaminen auttaa organisaatioita ymmärtämään, kuinka jo pienillä teoilla voi olla merkittäviä kustannusvaikutuksia myös laajemmin valtimotautien hoitamisessa. Ennaltaehkäisy on myös päätöksentekoa haastavaa, koska tulokset tulevat selvimmin näkyviin vasta vuosien päästä, yli budjettikauden. Siten tällaiset tutkimukset ovat tärkeitä vakuuttamaan ennaltaehkäisevien toimien tärkeyttä talouden niukkuudenkin aikakaudella, jolloin pitää uskaltaa investoida tulevaan, hallintoylilääkäri Petri Kivinen Siun sotesta sanoo.
  • Mahtavaa nähdä SPESiOR-ympäristössä ja käyttöliittymämalleillamme toteutettuja tutkimuksia ja terveyspolitiikkaan jälleen mahdollisesti vaikuttavia tuloksia. Toteutamme mielellämme helpompia ja myös tällaisia vaativampia RWD-tutkimuksia yhteistyössä sidosryhmien kanssa, toimitusjohtaja Erkki Soini ESiOR Oy:stä iloitsee.

Tutkimuksen toteuttaminen on ollut mahdollista Siun sotesta saatavan ainutlaatuisen terveystiedon ansiosta. Tutkimuksessa potilastietoja on käsitelty ilman potilaiden suoria tunnistetietoja toisiolain mukaisessa Valviran hyväksymässä tietoturvallisessa käyttöympäristössä SPESiOR®.

Seuraava askel Novartiksen, Siun soten ja ESiORin yhteistyössä on mallinnus siitä, miten sydänsairauksien riskitekijöihin vaikuttaminen pienentää sydäntapahtuman uusiutumisen kokonaisriskiä ja mikä vaikutus tällä on hoitokustannuksiin. Voidaan tarkastella esimerkiksi sitä, miten LDL-kolesterolitavoitteen saavuttaminen vaikuttaisi sydäntapahtuman uusintariskiin ja sitä kautta hyvinvointialueelle syntyviin SOTE-kustannuksiin. Tavoitteena on, että potilaat saavat tarpeellisen hoidon oikea-aikaisesti.

Lääketutkimuksen arvo potilaalle, terveydenhuollolle ja yhteiskunnalle

Yhden lääketutkimuksen arvo terveydenhuollolle on jopa 10 miljoonaa euroa

Lääketeollisuus ry:n kanssa toteuttamamme selvityksen mukaan yhden kliinisen lääketutkimuksen hoidon arvo potilaille on noin 1,2 miljoonaa euroa ja yhteiskunnallinen arvo Suomen terveydenhuollolle noin 10 miljoonaa euroa. Lääkeyritysten toimeksiantamat kliiniset lääketutkimukset tuottavatkin merkittävät välittömät sekä välilliset yhteiskunnalliset hyödyt Suomeen.

Käytännössä kliiniset tutkimukset edistävät lääketieteellistä tietoa ja innovaatioita sekä tarjoavat uusia mahdollisuuksia potilaille. ”Kliininen lääketutkimus auttaa hillitsemään terveydenhuollon kustannuksia, sillä tutkimuksen toteuttava lääkeyritys kattaa potilaan lääkehoidon, hoitotyön sekä seurannan kuluja, jotka muussa tapauksessa lankeaisivat yhteiskunnalle maksettavaksi”, Lääketeollisuus ry:n toimitusjohtaja Anne-Mari Virolainen toteaa.

Viimeisten 6 vuoden aikana alkaneiden kliinisten lääketutkimusten yhteiskunnallinen arvo oli keskimäärin noin 880 miljoonaa euroa. Kumulatiivinen arvo nousee 5,3 miljardiin euroon. Silti kliinisten lääketutkimusten määrä on Suomessa kuitenkin johdonmukaisesti laskenut.

Lääketeollisuus ry järjestää 13.6 klo 10–11 webinaarin tutkimuksen arvosta: ”Kliinisellä lääketutkimuksella on suuri merkitys yksittäiselle potilaalle. Potilaiden saaman hyödyn lisäksi kliiniset lääketutkimukset tuottavat laajoja yhteiskunnallisia hyötyjä.

GenomiTerveys project receives Biobank Research of the Year Award

The GenomiTerveys project, led by the Helsinki Biobank, has received the first-ever Biobank Research of the Year award from the Finnish Biobank Cooperative – FINBB. The project focused on identifying individuals with an increased risk of breast cancer using genetic data from biobank samples. The award recognizes the project’s significant benefits for those with cancer genes and the broader impact on Finnish healthcare.

ESiOR is proud to have taken part in the cost-effectiveness evaluation of this project! The results were presented at the European ISPOR 2023 congress. 

The project, which screened samples for gene mutations associated with a high cancer risk, developed methods for analyzing genomic data, established a national system to return information to sample donors and healthcare, and collaborated with hospitals to ensure effective biobank results. The findings revealed a gene error predisposing to breast cancer in every 200th sample, highlighting the potential of genomics in disease prevention and early treatment. The project also utilized patient databases from hospitals owning the biobanks.

The award underscores the value of utilizing data from Finnish biobanks for research with potential health benefits for individuals in Finland and globally.

Whereas the cost-effectiveness of health innovations, such as pharmaceuticals and medical devices, is routinely evaluated during the market access and reimbursement processes, the cost-effectiveness and monetary value of research is rarely evaluated. In this study, the value of research conducted at Kuopio University Hospital was assessed in terms of monetary benefits gained per investment in research.

From Biobank Sample to Breast Cancer Prevention — Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Returning Genomic Data to Sample Donors (EE361)

In the FinnGen study, genomic and health data from 500,000 Finnish biobank participants was studied to gain insight into the genetic basis of diseases. In this study, we assessed the cost-effectiveness of returning genetic cancer risk information to the female sample donors.

The Brain Research Unit 2.0 (ATY 2.0) Project has launched! Scientific innovation with business value

The Brain Research Unit 2.0 (Aivotutkimusyksikkö 2.0, ATY 2.0) is a collaborative effort between the University of Eastern Finland, the Northern Savo wellbeing services county, and the region’s health sector companies. The aim is to create an internationally attractive, scalable operating model for brain health clinical research that can also be used in other scientific fields.

The key focus of this new model is collaboration and partnership among academia, healthcare providers, patients, and industry stakeholders. This ensures that research findings are not only scientifically sound but also relevant and applicable to patients’ daily lives. For example, collaboration with academic teams and companies can promote the effective use of research findings as diagnostic and treatment methods. By involving patients as active participants, the project aims to promote patient-centered care and enable individuals to contribute directly to medical progress.

Erkki Soini, a health economist and CEO of ESiOR, highlights the importance of business value in the new model. From the business perspective, he says, companies would like a smooth research-to-business plan, including a clear idea of what innovations are needed.

By developing a new operating model for clinical trials, the Brain Research Unit 2.0 project aims to speed up the translation of research findings into clinical practice, benefitting patients and healthcare systems. In addition, the integration of real-world data and patient perspectives has the potential to redefine the way medical interventions are studied, leading to more effective treatments and improved patient outcomes.
